Hidden Sources of Sugar

Let’s imagine you have been working on your diet and doing well. You are working toward a healthy diet and clean eating… even goals like 5k runs and exercise groups or (gasp) even a half marathon. The problem is, you have been told by your

Sweet Potato Fries with Manjistha

Sweet Potato Fries with Manjistha

Having to avoid nightshades is frankly annoying.  Back in my pre-Hashimotos days when I was running 20-30 miles per week and cutting whole bags of jalapeños onto every meal I also enjoyed a nice fat burger with mushrooms, blue cheese and hot chips (French fries).

These days I look for subs everywhere for the spice and the mouthfeel and I have fallen in drool with Japanese sweet potato fries air fried with coconut oil, Himalayan salt, black pepper and this amazing, blood cleansing spice: Manjistha.

This little known spice is a heavy hitter in the herbal sphere – and boasts of so many benefits it is hard to count.  It’s slightly bitter flavor reminds me of paprika, so coupled with the right peppercorns I can almost recreate those smoky spicy flavors I enjoy.

Manjistha is a supreme Lymphatic tonic. It has a long history of being used in India to treat lymphatic disorders. Research has shown its efficacy as a blood, kidney and liver detoxifier, antioxidant, muscle relaxer, anti-seizure, and anti-anxiety remedy. The herb has also been shown to be an immune stimulant; one trial demonstrated an increase in white blood cells by 151%. We tend to think of it mostly as a lymphatic drainer and an anti-inflammatory for the musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal systems as well as an anti-anxiety herb.

Any spice or herb that helps with lymphatic drainage is a winner for me.  If you’ve ever woken up in the morning with puffy eyes or swollen joints, that is lymph congestion.  Your lymph is a clear fluid that travels throughout every organ of your body while you sleep and mops up toxins.  So my favorite trick to use in the morning to help flush those toxins is to drink 30-40oz of filtered water straight away before coffee, tea, breakfast, supplements etc.  It’s the healthiest and most inexpensive thing you can do for your health aside from getting sunshine (vitamin D) and walking barefoot (grounding)!

You can find Manjistha powder in my Fullscript Dispensary as well as health food stores.

Try it and let me know what you think!

Sweet Potato Fries with Manjistha

I love the smoky almost paprika flavor of these fries! Manjistha spice is a heavy hitter in the herbal sphere - and boasts of so many benefits it is hard to count.  It's slightly bitter flavor reminds me of paprika, so coupled with the right peppercorns I can almost recreate those smoky spicy flavors I enjoy.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer Oven or Large Cast Iron Pan

Ingredients

  • 1-2 Japanese Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 tbsp liquid coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp manjistha spice
  • 1/2 tsp Himalayan pink or Celtic sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black peppercorn blend of choice I like Tellicherry, smoked, Tasmanian pepperberries and Grains of Paradise

Instructions

  • Halve the sweet potatoes lengthwise, lie open face down and cut into strips at desired thickness. (I like mine about .75 centimeter)
  • Turn them on their side again and cut strips into fries.
  • Coat with liquid coconut oil* (I like to use a glass spray bottle for this, like Sally’s organics)
  • Sprinkle with Manjistha, salt and black pepper of choice and toss together.
  • Place in air fryer rack of Breville Smart Oven Air. (You can do this in a standard air fryer in smaller batches or place them all in a hot cast iron pan in a preheated oven)
  • Airfry at 360°F - 375°F for 25 minutes.
  • Serve.

How to do a Coffee Enema for Detox

How to do a Coffee Enema for Detox

I was long convinced of the benefits of coffee enemas for months before I gathered all the pieces together to do one… and then it was months again until I actually used it.  I was terrified to try.  But the benefits speak for themselves and

Calming Nighttime Drink

This is my evening calming drink.  I use Calm Gut Magnesium because it has probiotics as well as magnesium glycinate which is particularly good for deep sleep. I often combine two types, glycinate and citrate, the latter of which is a bowel mover and can

Supercharge your Detox with an Infrared Sauna Boosted Castor Oil pack!

Supercharge your Detox with an Infrared Sauna Boosted Castor Oil pack!

Castor Oil was used by Ancient Hebrews and in Traditional Chinese medicine, Indian Ayurveda, Ancient Egyptians and Mediterraneans for its rejuvenating health benefits including detoxification and fertility. For your own at home detox, apply cold pressed castor oil (preferably organic) in the middle of the castor pack or wool flannel (a few tablespoons is sufficient but I will sometimes apply to utter soaking). Place the soaked flannel underneath the right rib cage to effect multiple digestive organs, over the uterus for menstrual issues, or a smaller pack over the top of the neck for thyroid support. Adding certain essential oils to the castor oil before application can help with liver cleansing, parasitic protocols, digestive issues and immunity amongst other things.  Normally for a standard castor oil pack, you would then hang out like that for an hour.  You will also want a couple warm towels, plastic underneath to protect your mattress, and a heating pad over the top to increase the effectiveness of the castor oil pack. But there is a faster and much more potent way to get these benefits!  Using an Infrared Sauna has the added benefits of detox and cellular regeneration, which I will share more about below.

Applying castor oil over the belly and back (over the liver) and applying heat effectively helps the liver detox.  When you add proper detoxification oils and infrared sauna heat, you can boost detoxification.

Add a few drops of Zendocrine & Grapefruit essential oil to your carrier oil* with castor oil on top and sit in the sauna.  Do a quick patch test on your wrist overnight to make sure there are no allergies to the oils.

Castor oil is thick and can stain clothing! Wrap flannel or muslin fabric around your body to protect clothing or sit on a towel in a Sauna. This pack from Queen of the Thrones and this one from Palma Christi are both good. You can pick up the Palma Christi castor oil pack in my Fullscript Practitioner Dispensary for a bit less than amazon. My Link in Bio contains general links for doTERRA, Relax Sauna and Therasage, (two portable ones that are recommended by doctors— many cheap home saunas have high levels of EMF, electromagnetic field, which is not good for electrically charged beings!).  I have a coupon code for $75 off a Portable Infrared Sauna; use “BMW” at checkout for that.  Sign up for emails for $200 OFF one of these low EMF upright silver saunas. A good introduction to the effectiveness of Infrared sauna can be found here: 8 Benefits of Infrared Sauna (I will link clinical studies on the benefits of IR Sauna treatments below.)

Zendocrine essential oil blend supports the body’s natural ability to rid itself of unwanted substances.* It combines Rosemary, Cilantro and Juniper Berry, known for their detoxifying properties and ability to support healthy liver and kidney function, while Tangerine and Geranium have purifying effects against unhealthy substances.* Zendocrine helps cleanse the body of toxins and free radicals that can slow the body’s systems down, leaving a heavy, weighted feeling.* I also recommend certain oils for boosting a gut or parasite cleanse as well as immunity, which include On Guard and Frankincense.  I would recommend this in this season of Covid infections as studies are showing that the disease can lodge itself in the biofilms that are so common in the gut as we get older.  More on that in this article. All the more reason to clear that out with a gut cleanse, which I wrote about recently here.  I have put together a cart of doTERRA oils + OnGuard for Parasite Cleanse & Immunity Boost (you can add or remove oils & membership, but it’s worth it once you have more than two things in the cart) here and I highly recommend these to boost both a detox and a gut cleanse.  It can be extremely helpful to have a binder to help encapsulate heavy metals and toxins so they do not recirculate.  I recommend Results RNA Zeolite Spray, which is a nanoparticle zeolite based binder and can be found in my Fullscript.  It is sublingual and I use it for myself and my kids starting with one spray per day and worked up to 12.  I also recommend replenishing with minerals.  Ideal Living has the AquaTru Reverse Osmosis Water Filter (I own the undersink version) which has an option for minerals in the actual filter.  I also like Quinton Isotonic, a sea kelp plasma mineral that tastes great and covers all the bases as well as Quinton Hypertonic, which is great for remineralization, energy metabolism, protein synthesis and cell division amongst other benefits.  Both can be found in my Fullscript Dispensary.

Benefits of Infrared Sauna:

Studies have shown that near infrared light stimulates white blood cell production, promotes cell regeneration, restores enzyme activity, and reduces cell death. This helps your body repair cells and tissues that were damaged by heavy metals and toxins.  More on that in this article: Biological effects and medical applications of infrared radiation.

  • Improves heart function
  • Better sleep
  • Relaxation
  • Detoxification
  • Weight loss
  • Relief from sore muscles
  • Relief from chronic and joint pain such as arthritis
  • Clearer and tighter skin
  • Improved circulation
  • Help for chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Lowers side effects of diabetes

So if you didn’t already love the idea of infrared sauna… now you have all the more reason to make this a part of your health regimen!  My sauna with link is pictured below and I love that 1) my head sticks out as this is always the part of the sauna that I don’t love, and 2) It packs down to a compact size that can slide under the bed.  If you go this route with Relax Saunas remember to use my Brenna May Wellness code, “BMW” at checkout for your discount!

Be blessed, healthy and joyful my friends!

Brenna xo

Why a gut cleanse is important and how to do it!

Why a gut cleanse is important and how to do it!

Alright.  First things first.  THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE.  I am not a medical practitioner.  I am a Nutrition Coach and someone who has multiple gene mutations including MTHFR and has traveled to 20 countries as well as eaten pork.  I have parasites.  So gut
