Should you buy an Oura Ring?

Two women can buy the same ring and get opposite things from it, and it is worth knowing which one you are before you spend the money.

For one of them it becomes the first real evidence that what she has been describing for years is actually happening. For the other it becomes one more thing to be graded on. The ring does not know the difference, and it will not warn you.

So this is not a review. It is the conversation I have with clients who ask me whether to get one.

First, what it is not

This is the question I get asked most, and the answer disappoints people. An Oura ring is not a sleep study, and it cannot tell you whether you have obstructive sleep apnea (sleep apnea), the condition where breathing repeatedly stops and restarts through the night.

Oura says so themselves, in writing. The ring is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent any condition. At the time of writing no smart ring on the market holds clearance for detecting sleep apnea, and Samsung’s is expected to be the first.

What Oura has built instead is a doorway, which I think is the honest version. Members whose nighttime breathing looks disturbed now get pointed toward sleep education, an assessment, and a route to a provider who is qualified to say what it means. The ring notices. Someone else interprets.

Which brings me to the one mistake worth naming out loud. If a provider has recommended a sleep study, a reassuring sleep score is not a reason to skip it. A ring that looks fine has not ruled anything out. It has only failed to notice, and those are different.

What it is actually good at

What it does well has very little to do with detecting anything. It is a mirror.

Most people already suspect what is costing them. They have simply been talked out of the suspicion, usually by someone holding a certificate and a program, and sometimes by their own self at the hour when the plan says go regardless.

I have Hashimoto’s. I have stood in my own kitchen before it was light, already dressed, arguing with a body that had made its position perfectly clear the night before. I lost that argument more often than I won it, and losing it was the right outcome nearly every time. I am a former athlete and farm-raised… so this sort of thing has happened on repeat over the years.

A week of your own data is very hard to argue with. That is the whole of what the ring contributes, and it is worth more than it sounds.

A pattern I see often

A client trains hard. The night straight afterward looks unremarkable. The two or three nights after that do not, and by the end of the week everything has tilted, and she is tired in a way that has no obvious cause attached to it.

Autoimmune conditions often work this way. The bill arrives late, and late is exactly long enough for the connection to be lost. She knows she feels terrible. She has no idea why, because the thing that caused it happened days ago and felt good at the time.

Laid out in front of her, the shape of it becomes obvious in about four seconds. And what that changes is not her plan. It changes the question I ask. Instead of asking how her week went, I ask what she would like to do about what she is looking at.

Pacing is a different decision from direction

There are two separate decisions inside any piece of health work, and treating them as one is where a lot of otherwise-good practice falls apart.

The first is direction, meaning what to work on. The second is pacing, meaning how hard and how fast. Wearable data is close to useless for the first and genuinely useful for the second. Nothing about a rough few nights tells me what a body needs. It tells me what that body can reasonably carry this week, which is a smaller question and a more answerable one.

And the decision that follows is not mine to make. My work is to put the pattern somewhere she can see it and then get out of the way. She has had a practitioner tell her what to do, and a trainer tell her what to do, and an internet full of strangers telling her what to do. What she has not had in a long time is anybody suggesting her own body might be a reasonable source of information.

That is the part I care about, and it is the reason I mention the ring at all.

Who should not buy an Oura ring

If you already count things, weigh things, check things, or if a number about your body can set the tone of your entire day, this is not your tool and I would rather you kept the money.

A nightly score in the hands of somebody inclined toward self-surveillance stops being information and becomes a grade. The person handing out that grade is the only one in the room willing to be quite that harsh with you.

There is no version of this where you use it a little and stay fine. If you have a history of disordered eating, or of exercise you could not stop when you wanted to, or of health worry that takes your evenings from you, the ring will find that in you and it will feed it. None of that is a character flaw and none of it is a reason to feel bad reading this. It is a reason to skip a product, which is a very small thing to give up.

If any of that landed, it is worth walking through with someone rather than sorting it out alone from a webpage.

How to tell which one you are

One question, answered honestly. When a number about your body comes back worse than you hoped, what is the very next thing you feel?

If the answer is curiosity, you will do well with this, and it may give you language for something you have been trying to describe for years.

If the answer is that you have failed, put it down. That is not the tool you need, and needing a different one is not a loss.

What it costs, and how I see the data

The ring is ten percent off through my dispensary. Oura also runs a separate membership subscription for the app, which is theirs and is not included in that.

If you are a client and you want me looking at any of it, you choose to sync it, and you can stop at any point. Nothing arrives on my side unless you send it, and nothing about the work depends on you owning one of these.

Where to get it

Through my own dispensary rather than a marketplace, for the same reason I buy everything else that way. I want to know who the seller is and that it has not changed since the last order, in the case of supplements, or that it is legitimately sourced from the manufacturer.

This link earns me a small commission. It does not change what you pay, and I only list things I actually use or are useful in my practice.

The rest of the dispensary is there too. Browse the whole thing.

One last thing, because it is the part that matters most. None of this diagnoses anything, and none of it replaces care from your own provider. If you are worried about your breathing at night, that is a conversation to have with somebody qualified to answer it, and no ring is a substitute for that conversation.
