Foundations first
First the ground, then everything else.
We are not chasing symptoms here. We are tending the soil the body grows in, and a good deal of what looked like a list of separate problems tends to resolve as a set.
This is where every case starts, and where the hard ones come back to.
We are made for sun, soil, trees, and the work of tending the ground and the animals that feed us, and we have put ourselves in artificial spaces with artificial food and artificial light and artificial stress, and then we wonder why we are malfunctioning.
Terrain is the word for the ground underneath the symptoms, and tending it comes down to five things: the raw materials coming in, how they are broken down and absorbed, how energy is kept steady, how the body rests, and how it handles pressure. None of that is exotic. All of it is upstream of a great deal that gets treated as separate.
The order carries as much weight as the list.
These are foundations rather than a menu, and they feed each other roughly north to south, so what comes in, then how it is processed, then how it is regulated, then how the body restores and steadies. You do not water a field that will not drain.
Which is why the first question here is almost never which supplement to take, and almost always what ought to happen first.
The ground we tend
Five foundations, tended together.
Nutrition
Dietary Intake and Nutrient Sufficiency
Whether you are getting the raw materials your body needs to run well. Everything downstream depends on what comes in, as you cannot build tissue, make hormones, or steady your energy out of materials that were never on the table. This is the widest foundation and the one most within your daily reach.
Protein and amino acids. The anchor of the plate, and the building blocks for tissue, hormones, enzymes, and steady energy.
Hydration. Fluid balance, and how well the body is watered. The simplest lever and the most overlooked.
Fatty acids. The fats that skin, brain, and cell membranes are built from. Structure and signalling as much as fuel.
Minerals. The structural and spark-plug minerals the body runs on, and the difference between a body that has its parts and one that is improvising.
Digestion
Digestive Function and Absorption
How well you break food down and take up what is in it. You can eat well and still not be nourished. This sits directly below Nutrition because it decides how much of what came in actually reaches you, and it is the gate between the plate and the cell.
Blood Sugar
Glycemic Regulation
How steady your energy is, and how your body answers food. When this swings, everything feels it: mood, focus, cravings, sleep, hormones. Steady blood sugar is the floor a good deal of the other work stands on.
Light and circadian entrainment sits alongside this one as much as it sits with sleep, as the same signal reaches metabolism and appetite. There is more on the environmental terrain page.
Sleep
Sleep Quality and Restoration
How well you fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake restored. Sleep is when the body does its repair and its filing, and you can do everything else right and still stall here, as that work happens overnight or it does not happen.
Stress Response
Stress Physiology and Nervous System Regulation
How your body handles pressure and settles afterward. Nobody is asking whether life is stressful. The question is whether your nervous system can move into effort and come back out of it. A body stuck in the pressure state has a hard time digesting, sleeping, or steadying its blood sugar, which is why this one touches all the others.
Elimination, and why it sits apart.
Elimination is not a sixth foundation, and that has nothing to do with it mattering less. Sweat, lymph, urine and stool are all assessed, and so are the liver’s three phases of detoxification. It is measured in as many places as anything else on this page.
What sets it apart is the job it does. The five are entry points, levers you can reach in and turn. Elimination is the exit, and you open it by tending the five rather than by working on it directly.
What it changes is pace. Before any deeper clearing work I want to know the routes are open, and trouble in either direction is a reason to wait. Backed up, and nothing can leave. Wide open, loose and urgent and driven by something like a parasite, and pushing harder only makes a person miserable and can need a doctor involved. Both mean the same thing to me. Slow down, tend the foundations, do not force the exit.
The layer running alongside.
The body is not built only out of food and minerals. It is built out of the information it receives about where it is, what time it is, and what season it is. Light and earth contact are two of the largest channels carrying that information, and most modern people have had both cut off without noticing.
This runs alongside the five rather than replacing any of them, and it has a page of its own.
What this looks like when we work together.
Nobody gets a protocol on day one. There is a long assessment first, because I would rather know what a body is actually doing than guess. Sometimes we start with whatever is loudest, as a woman who cannot sleep, or cannot eat without pain, needs that handled before she can do anything else. More often we start further down, with whatever the loud thing is standing on.
When a case gets harder I follow the thread rather than adding to the pile. I follow every thread it gives me, and they nearly always run back to something basic: protein, minerals, digestion, sleep. The more complicated a picture looks, the likelier it is that something plain is missing underneath it.
Readiness comes before intensity. There is a version of this work that moves fast, and it is the right call for some people at some points, but it is not usually a starting point.
A long list of everything harming you is not education. Give a woman enough of that and she will either give up or take the whole list on board and begin optimizing, and the optimizing becomes the illness. She stops eating with people. She stops traveling. She reads labels in the aisle for an hour and comes home with nothing. The register here stays plain, and where something is genuinely urgent I say so, which is the only thing that makes saying so worth anything.
Very little of this has to be perfect, and how little moves with how much reserve a body has left.
Where to start.
The newsletter takes the foundations one at a time, slowly, with something you can actually do in the week you are having. It is also where Groundwork, the twelve-week group program, opens first.
If you are a practitioner rather than a patient, the assessment behind this page and the teaching layer that goes with it are in peer review with other practitioners. May Practice Frameworks.
